The first SpringHillian was published December 20, 1924, with students serving as the editors. The six-page issued covered a wide variety of topics, including school sports, the Christmas season, obituaries and alumni events. One article discussed the Spring Hill football team and that Eddie McEvoy, the star halfback, would serve as the 1925 team captain. The entire list of courses the college and high school offered is available in the issue, along with advertisements from local businesses in Mobile, such as O’Shea Knitting Mills and The Toggery. The SpringHillian has certainly changed through the years, with a stronger emphasis on pictures and graphics, as well as a more conscious effort to create content that is appropriate for all audiences. Dr. Babington, Associate Professor of Journalism and current SpringHillian advisor, explains, “I noticed that before the Internet, staff members let their "true college colors" come out with sometimes-edgy content -- the idea being that what was published probably wouldn't make it outside the walls of SHC. Today, our content is on the Web, meaning potential employers can find the content our staff members produce. We still cover college themes, but I think the students are mindful of producing content that would support their future job prospects.” Babington also notices a difference in the quality of the production. “I think the campus newspaper has grown in its quality rather than in its quantity. It used to be that all of us were wowed by 20-page newspapers. But in the end, students worked so hard at quantity that sometimes quality suffered. Today, we're publishing 12-page newspapers that I believe showcase higher-quality communication -- better-written and better-edited stories, and higher-quality designs.”
